Description: The first sporting event ever observed by Europeans in North America was a lacrosse game in 1637. Jesuit missionaries from France saw hundreds of native men playing a ball game with sticks that they thought resembled a bishop's crosier, so they called the game "lacrosse."
That makes lacrosse the oldest sport in America, and in the 21st century it is also the fastest growing. This growth in participation, domestically and globally, presents the sport with a new set of opportunities and several challenges.
Students in 'The History of Sport' class at Syracuse University's Department of Sport Management researched the history, current status, and future prospects of lacrosse during the 2012-2013 academic year. This film is a product of their research, which was led by Sport Management faculty.
The big screen (that is, the one at home) may be preferred for viewing, but the video remains available online if you prefer. It lasts about an hour.
We are proud to announce the newest lacrosse program in Tampa - Northwest Tampa Lacrosse! Our goal is to provide the area with a great, local lacrosse experience for all ages and levels of players. Our mission is to offer a quality lacrosse program for elementary, middle, and high school boys and girls, and we will field our first teams beginning with the January 2014 season. NW Tampa Lax is the perfect place for players new to the sport, as well as for experienced players who would like to learn and grow their game. In addition to youth leagues, NW Tampa Lax will sponsor the girls and boys club teams of Alonso, Sickles, and Steinbrenner High Schools, providing a feeder program to our local high schools.
The NW Tampa Lacrosse board is comprised of previous board members from the Steinbrenner High School and Alonso High School club programs as well as the leadership from Citrus Park Lacrosse and the Bay Area Lacrosse Association (Sand Sharks). For those familiar with or currently playing for Citrus Park Lacrosse, the program will become part of NW Tampa Lax and will forego its previous name to fully integrate with this group.
NW Tampa Lacrosse introduces the Northwest Tampa PRIDE. We'll be fielding U-11/9, U-13 and U-15 teams for boys for the 2014 spring season and will accept players of all levels from beginner to the most experienced. For high school players we offer club teams that will play in the Florida Gulf Coast Lacrosse League during season (Sickles Club, Steinbrenner Club, Alonso Club). In the off-seasons (summer and fall), players may choose to join either our travel or local, competitive Sand Sharks and Lady Sharks teams.
NW Tampa Lacrosse will be hosting introductory clinics throughout the fall for anyone who would like to see what lacrosse is all about! Keep an eye on our website, www.NWTampaLax.com , for details.
We hope you are as excited as we are about the formation of this fully-integrated, instructional and competitive lacrosse program in which your children can grow. You can be sure they will receive quality instruction while learning to play lacrosse with honor and good sportsmanship. We invite you to join us. Let’s grow the game!
